On Saturday April 9, 2011 the BPC garden crew got started on this year’s crop. After a delicious breakfast at the BPC Pre K pancake breakfast the crew quickly got busy filling the newly framed beds with a rich mixture of soil and mulch just perfect for a garden. The beds were filled in no time thanks to the eager helpers and the good quality soil. After the beds were filled and the soil leveled we planted cabbage and red leaf lettuce. Hopefully the deer will stay away long enough to have several good harvests. BPC members recently answered the call for help from the Society of St. Andrews to help glean collards from a field just outside Louisburg, NC.  On both March 12th and 19th, a caravan of BPC folks left the church at 8:00 am to trek down highway 56 to a collard field near Edward Best Elementary School, where the owners were allowing us to glean 1/2 of their field to feed the hungry.

Many Butner Presbyterian Church members and friends participated with other local churches and civic organizations to build a house in Stem for a needy family. The day dawned bright and clear on March 22, 2008. A rather large group gathered in the parking lot at Butner Presbyterian Church and waited in anxious anticipation for the command to ‘move out’. When the appointed time arrived, a long caravan of cars departed and moved in-synch in a northerly direction. The bags are delivered to households throughout the community and the volunteers ask willing families for food donations to feed the needy. The bags of donated food are collected the following weekend, then sorted and reassembled to provide a variety of nutrition for each family. A Concert for Haiti Earthquake Relief was held at BPC on April 23rd to increase awareness and provide financial support to the relief efforts in Haiti. The concert, “Making a Hopeful Noise”, was sponsored by the Butner Church Council and included musicians from the local community. Approximately 100 supporters turned out for an evening of entertainment, education and support of a truly worthy cause.

BPC was searching for a way to make a difference. Our search for meaningful mission work led us to the Society of St. Andrews, which runs an operation called Harvest of Hope. The genesis of the calling for of this type of service can be found in the book of Deuteronomy, which states, “When you gather the grapes of your vineyard, do not glean what is left; it shall be for the alien, the orphan, and the widow” (24:21). Following Sunday services on April 11th 2010, volunteers from the BPC congregation set up tires and filled them with dirt as the initial stage of establishing our community garden. This garden will be used to grow vegetables for the church family and needy families in the local community. This is yet another project that supports the “Feeding the Hungry” theme for 2010. One of the main missions of the church is to feed the hungry and we have adopted the theme of “Responding to Hunger in our Midst” for 2011. After reading “The Hole in our Gospel”, a book by Richard Stearns CEO of World Vision, the study group decided to take direct action and they challenged the church family to sponsor a child. The backpack program was initiated in February of 2009. The first backpacks were delivered to Butner Stem Elementary School on February 24th, 2010. We were initially serving 6 students through the program. That figure increased quickly to 8 students and by the middle of March we were serving 9 students, which we continued to do for the remainder of the school year. ]]>
